Picture a cancer cell happily chomping on a sugary peppermint stick. As long as this cancer cell can get a regular supply of sugar – or glucose – it lives and thrives longer than it should. Now imagine starving that cancer of its sugar supply – would it die?
Healthy and Unhealthy Cell Cycles
All of your cells need glucose (blood sugar) for energy. Healthy cells follow a life cycle of growth, division and death. Like leaves on a tree, old cells die off and are replaced by an equal number of healthy cells. Cancer develops when old cells refuse to die, but keep growing, dividing, and building up in one place – creating a tumor.
Cancer Loves Sugar – Truth or Rumor?
This familiar saying, "cancer loves sugar" has been around since the 1924 publication of Dr. Otto Warburg's paper, "On metabolism of tumors."Warburg was a Nobel Prize winning cell biologist who wrote, "Summarized in a few words, the prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal body cells by a fermentation of sugar." Many people who referred to his work in later years misquoted Warburg's statement by saying, "cancer loves sugar."
Warburg's hypothesis stated that cancer growth was caused when cancer cells converted glucose into energy without using oxygen. Healthy cells make energy by converting pyruvate and oxygen. The pyruvate is oxidized within a healthy cell'smitochondria, and Warburg theorized that since cancer cells don't oxidize pyruvate, cancer must be considered a mitochondrial dysfunction.
Now that we know more about the genetics of cancer, we know that cancer is not a mitochondrial dysfunction, but is caused by genetic mutations, such as appear on the genesBRCA1 and BRCA2. It is true that healthy cells and cancer cells convert their food to energy in different ways, but that difference is an effect, and not a cause, of cancer.
Sugar and Proteins Keep Cancer Cells Alive
It's been said that cancer cells are immortal – they don't die off in an orderly way like healthy cells do. Scientists have studied this effect and may have discovered what tumor cells do to avoid cell death. In laboratory research at Duke University, cancer cells appear to use a combination of sugar and specific proteins to keep growing when they should die. These cancer cells appear to use sugar at a high rate, in order to ignore cellular instructions to die off. So might sugar – which appears to make cancer cells stronger – someday turn out to be cancer's Achilles' Heel?
Developing New Sugar-Coated Cancer Drugs
At Johns Hopkins University, a group of researchers looked at ways to fool cancer cells into growing more slowly and then eventually killing themselves. They studied abnormal glycosylation - how cancer cells put sugar and proteins together to sustain themselves. When these cells were given n-butyrate (a salt) with carbohydrates (contains sugar), cell proliferation slowed down. In order to feed the cancer a death-dealing drug, they produced a hybrid molecule made of a simple sugar and n-butyrate. Because the cancer cells absorbed the sugar readily, they soaked up this new molecule, which interfered with their ability to keep growing, and they died.
Other teams of scientists are working on drugs that will take advantage of cancer's weakness for sugar. Some of these new drugs may be given along with chemotherapy, to make tumor cells more sensitive to chemo drugs. In Switzerland, scientists are using a sugar coating on "quantum dots" or nanocrystals of drugs that would travel to the liver only, avoiding other organs. It's the sugar on those little doses that help the drugs target one particular part of the body, thereby reducing side effects and increasing the effects of the drugs.
Be Smart About Sugar in Your Diet
Sugar provides energy, but doesn't give you any nutrients that are needed to reduce your cancer risk. Natural sugars are in fruits and vegetables as well as honey and molasses – they should be part of a healthy diet. Processed sugars such as white or brown sugar and corn syrup should be avoided or limited. Consuming too many sugar calories can lead toobesity and high insulin levels, which would contribute to your increased cancer risk. Cut back on sugar-loaded foods such as candy, baked goods, sugary cereals and sodas to reduce your cancer risk. Balance your diet with plant foods, fish, and whole grains. Use white sugar sparingly and try natural sweeteners instead.
Sweet Ending
It's OK to eat some natural sugars on a daily basis. Sugar in your diet does not cause cancer to develop. Starving all of your cells of sugar won't kill or prevent cancer, but it will deprive your healthy cells of a necessary source of energy. Keeping a balance of nutritious foods and a regular exercise routine can give you a healthy body weight and normal insulin levels. That's the sweet way to reduce your cancer risk.

missing my boy

I am sitting here looking through photos of Jarren and I just can not believe that he has lost his battle with cancer and went home to be with our Lord. so many thoughts run through my head every day and not one of them every has my by in heaven before me I know it doesn't make sense but neither does this world we have put in. so many of us go about living our lives without a thought to anyone else outside of the ones we see and we never would imagine that any of our children would every get cancer that is just not something kids should get... Now here I sit with a huge hole in the center of my chest and my first born son, the one i have had a name for for close to 15 years, and the one i will never get to watch play ball of March in the band because of CANCER. why? why do kids get cancer? why did my boy get cancer? what purpose does it serve? I still see people going about their own lives like no body else is in the world but them! how do we change that or are we to selfish to change? why can't we care and love without needing something in return? why cant we just love like Jesus and not have a political statement behind it? why cant we stop being so greedy and selfish?

The Bumblebee Foundation
~ Sharing Hope~

Established in memory of Jarren Mitchell Donatini who lost his battle with Hepatoblastoma (liver cancer) November 1, 2010 at the age of 4 1/2.  Throughout his 18 month fight for his life Jarren endured multiple surgeries and numerous rounds of chemo.  During treatment and all the side effects associated with chemo Jarren never lost his love for life.   His contagious smile and deep brown soulfull eyes captured the hearts of all who knew him, as well as many who never met him but fell in love with him through his story.

The Bumblebee Foundation is committed to sharing hope with pediatric cancer families fighting the same battle.  The needs of these families is tremendous:  medical bills, prescriptions, transportation expenses, lodging expenses, and counseling to name a few.

With your help we can ease some of the burden these families face as they too fight for their child's life.  Thank you for sharing HOPE with us.

BumbleBee

Bumblebee

I have written about signs before.  I suppose I'm lucky in the fact that I do see them.  Or maybe it's because my eyes are wide open and I so desperately want something tangible to hold onto; something to bring comfort.

When we arrived in Maui shortly after laying our precious Jarren's earthly "shell" to rest, I was having a really hard time.  As Jason and I talked I told him that I needed God to send me a sign.  Something to let me know our baby was okay even though I knew he was in heaven.  We prayed together that night and Jason asked God to reveal something to me.

That next day the three of us walked down to the beach.  We passed by many big, black bees flittering from flower to flower and thought nothing of it.  After a few hours at the beach we decided to go back to the kiddie pool at our timeshare.

While in the pool a little bumblefee flew down and landed by the edge of the pool.  My immediate response to Jason was to "smash it."  Surely some barefoot victim would step on it and get stung.  Jason disagreed with me and watched the bee intently.  He even splashed water on it a few times and the bee refused to leave until we finally got out of the pool.

The next morning Jason was watching Jarren's favorite movie, Transformers, with Vincent.  There is a particular scene where Optimus Prime (the leader of the Autobots aka the good guys) introduces Sam (the lead character) to the rest of the transformers.  As Optimus makes his way around the Autobots he says to Sam, "and you already know your guardian, Bumblebee."  Epiphany!  Oh my goodness!  Bumblebee.  Guardian.  God sent the bumblebee for us.  That's Jarren!  Thank you God!  I was elated.

During the remainder of our time in Maui we noticed many bumblebees.  Granted, there are a lot of beautiful flowering Hibiscus around but I seemed to be followed by the bees.  Many of which would randomly float up beside me in the middle of the ocean.

I don't know if there is a particular "season" for bees (Spring would seem likely) but I've been comforted by the fact that I've seen them in the middle of our cold (okay, 60 degree) winter since we've been home.  The other day I got in the car and one landed on my windshield momentarily.  As I pulled up to a stop sign last week with my mom and sister in the car, another bee landed on the windshield and stayed there as I was driving for quite a while.  Of course it was one big sob fest.

My friend Stephanie reminded me that before Bumblebee, Buzz Lightyear was Jarren's ultimate hero and what sound does a bee make?  Buzz. Yet another sign that those bees came from above.
I am so thankful for these signs.

And yet another sign for the BumbleBee foundation; while we had Jarren's teachers over for dinner they had told us that for 20 years Jarren's schools logo was a bear and on september 2010 the month Jarren started scholl the logo changed to yeah you guessed it a BumbleBee!! I think GOD was part of that don't you?

Aluminum that might disturb you!!

As the metal aluminum is present in our food, water supply, and soil, most people suffer from some degree of aluminum toxicity. After years of accumulated exposure and storage of it in body tissues, this poison can have results ranging from brain degeneration to skeletal deformities.

Dangers of Aluminum Toxicity

  • It is particularly poisonous to the nervous system with a range of symptoms that can include disturbed sleep, nervousness, emotional instability, memory loss, headaches, and impaired intellect.
  • It can stop the body's ability to digest and make use of calcium, phosphorus and fluoride. This prevents bone growth and reduces bone density. Aluminum can also cause conditions which actually force calcium out of the bones. Either of these situations can bring on weakness and deformation in the bone structure with crippling effects.
  • Toxicity can also result in aching muscles, speech problems, anemia, digestive problems, lowered liver function, colic and impaired kidney function.

Sources of Aluminum

  • Over the counter medications can be one of the largest sources of aluminum:
    • Frequent users of buffered aspirin, such as people with arthritis, could possibly take up to 700 mg of this metal each day. But since aluminum contributes to bone damage, the aspirin actually enhances arthritis.
    • Digestive aides such as diarrhea and hemorrhoid medicines can also contain aluminum. A typical dose of aluminum-containing antacids can contain as much as 200 mg. and an entire day's use can supply 800-5000 mg. of aluminum.
  • Aluminum is also often added to hygiene aids such as antiperspirants and douches.
  • Food that has been cooked or stored in aluminum pots and aluminum foil is another source. Estimates say that as much as 4 milligrams of aluminum can be transferred to each serving of an acidic food such as tomatoes or citrus fruits that has been heated or stored with aluminum.
  • Stainless steel cookware can be a source as well as it is made by bonding the stainless steel with layers of aluminum. My testing and experience shows that after stainless steel cookware has been used for a short period of time, aluminum traces begin to enter the food.
  • There are six aluminum salts that have been approved as food additives in the United States. The salts most commonly used are sodium aluminum phosphates. They are added to cake mixes, frozen dough, pancake mixes, self-rising flours, processed cheese and cheese foods and beer (in aluminum cans). Just one slice of individually wrapped processed cheese can contain up to 50 mg of aluminum. It is thought that the cheeseburger may contain one of the highest aluminum contents of any food. Baked goods have approximately 5-15 mg per serving.
  • An average sized pickle contains 5 to 10 mg if it has been treated in an alum solution which is commonly done. Alum is a form of aluminum sulfate that is used in the pickling solution to firm up the cucumbers.

Nutritional Support

While the first step in ridding your body of this poison is to avoid aluminum intake as much as possible. The next is to provide your body with nutritional support to give it the strength it needs to detoxify this metal. There are several supplements that can assist in this process. They are Core Level C, Core Level Health Reserve and Core Level Liver.

Detoxification Symptoms

When aluminum comes out of its stored locations in your body it can act as an irritant. For example it has a tendency to irritate nerve endings which can irritate muscles. Therefore, when someone is detoxifying aluminum, there can be discomfort involved. And, since the kidneys are the organs that handle this detoxification, there may be pain in the back, over the kidneys, also.
Because aluminum tends to concentrate itself in the brain, the detoxification process can be accompanied by mental confusion.
It can also cause flu-like symptoms with fever, chills and mucous discharge. The detoxification will run its course and the symptoms will go away. Because any nasal discharge will be toxic, spit it out instead of swallowing it.

Reducing Aluminum Exposure

  • In your home, you should replace aluminum or metal cookware with one of several options: Enamel coated steel cookware is a safe option. For frying, old-fashioned cast iron works best, but please avoid the non stick surfaces. Corning ware and Visions cookware are also safe but again please use without the non stick surfaces as they are toxic.
  • Do not cook with aluminum foil, and minimize its use for food storage. Never use it to wrap acidic foods (oranges, lemons, tomatoes, etc.) or cooked food that is still hot.
  • Use bamboo steamers instead of metal vegetable steamers.
  • As nearly all cooked restaurant food has aluminum in it, here are a couple options regarding that. - Reduce your cooked choices of food while dining in a restaurant as raw food has no contact with their cooking utensils. Order salads and cole slaw and juice!
    - If you do eat cooked restaurant food, take 3-6 Core Level C's with the meal. This will help your body move out some of the aluminum before it stores in your body.
  • Check the labels of all food, medicinal and hygienic products you buy, avoiding those that have aluminum content.
  • Minimize your intake of cheese, particularly processed cheeses.
  • Minimize your intake of any baked goods that are not homemade without aluminum additives.

Over to You

While your body can tolerate low levels of aluminum, you must be sure that the level stays low and does not build up. This requires care and continued monitoring. There are tests such as hair/urine/blood analysis that can be done to help you monitor the aluminum levels in your system. Let us know if you need any assistance in getting these done.
